Building a Spa Empire: Denise Dubois on Beauty, Wellness & Sustainable Business Growth

In the world of aesthetics, longevity is the ultimate testament to quality. I recently had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Jeremy Rivera, host of the Unscripted Small Business podcast by Permacast Walls, to reflect on a journey that began over three decades ago. This interview was a special chance to step back and look at how the spa industry has evolved, and how my mission to help others age gracefully has remained my guiding light.

Rooted in Expertise: From 1983 to the Launch of Dubois Beauty

I have been part of the spa community since 1983. As a practicing esthetician and product developer, my work has always been about more than just surface-level treatments; it’s about a holistic commitment to the skin. In 1987, I founded Complexion Spa for Beauty and Wellness, which has since grown into two beautiful locations in Albany and Saratoga Springs.

Watching the industry shift from the analog days of paper booking books in 1987 to the digital launch of my clean beauty brand, Dubois Beauty, in 2022 has been an invigorating evolution. Throughout this time, I also authored my book, Living Beautifully, to share my philosophy on wellness and longevity. For me, the "spa lifestyle" is not a luxury—it is a blueprint for living well at every age.

The Science of the 90/10 Rule

During my discussion on the Unscripted Small Business podcast, I shared a concept that I believe is the most empowering piece of knowledge any client can have: the 90/10 Rule of Aging.

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that only about 10% of how we age is determined by our genetics. That leaves a staggering 90% that is influenced by our everyday lifestyle choices. This means we truly have more control than we think over our biological clock.

  • The 10%: Your genetic blueprint.
  • The 90%: Your diet, your stress management, and the purity of your personal care products.

As I mentioned to Jeremy, "We do need to be mindful of not only what we put into our body, but what we put onto our body." By choosing clean, high-performance ingredients, we support the skin's natural ability to repair and renew.

Building a Sustainable Sanctuary Through Systems

Sustaining a small business for 39 years requires a marriage of passion and professional rigor. I credit the growth of our spa empire to the implementation of systems that ensure a consistency of quality at every touchpoint—from the initial phone call to the moment a guest departs our sanctuary.

I’ve always believed that constructive feedback is the greatest tool for growth. When we face challenges or receive a complaint, I tell my staff: "What is the lesson to learn?" We choose to find solutions rather than make excuses. This commitment to "training, training, training" is what allows us to remain a trusted authority in the wellness space while scaling our message of beauty and health.
