The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Written by Denise Dubois - Published at
Every October, I find myself reflecting on the women who have touched my life—clients, friends, and family members—who have faced breast cancer. As the founder of Dubois Beauty, this month is always a meaningful reminder that beauty isn’t just about what we put on our skin. It’s about our health, our choices, and the ways we care for ourselves and one another.
For me, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about shining a light on the importance of early detection, supporting research, and empowering women with knowledge and tools to take charge of their health. It’s also about connection—reminding each other that none of us walks this journey alone.
Understanding the Impact of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer touches nearly every family in some way. Whether it’s a loved one, a friend, or a client, most of us know someone whose life has been forever changed by this disease. In the U.S. alone, hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed each year. Those numbers are staggering, but they also remind us why awareness matters so much.
The truth is, when breast cancer is detected early, survival rates improve dramatically. That’s why conversations about self-exams, screenings, and mammograms are so important. This month is our yearly nudge to schedule those appointments, check in with ourselves, and encourage the women we love to do the same.
How the Beauty Industry Supports Awareness
I’ve always believed the beauty industry is about so much more than lipstick shades or serums—it’s about empowerment. Over the years, I’ve watched this industry come together in October to make a difference, and I’m proud to be part of that movement.
Limited Edition Products
One of the most visible ways brands contribute is through special pink-themed collections in October. These products are often conversation starters—little reminders that every purchase can support something bigger. At Dubois Beauty, our focus is on clean beauty, which means every product is free from harmful ingredients. That mission feels especially meaningful during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when we’re reminded that what we put on our bodies can affect our overall health.
Donation Campaigns
Many companies also pledge a portion of proceeds to breast cancer research or patient support groups. I love seeing this generosity in action, and at Dubois Beauty, we are committed to giving back as well.
During the month of October, a portion of all online sales from Dubois Beauty will be donated to the American Cancer Society. This organization does incredible work supporting patients, funding lifesaving research, and providing resources for families navigating a diagnosis. Knowing that every purchase helps contribute to that mission makes your skincare routine even more meaningful.
Easy Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness
You don’t have to own a business to make a difference. Here are a few simple ways each of us can help this month:
- Wear Pink with Intention: Sometimes, just wearing a ribbon sparks a conversation that encourages someone else to schedule a mammogram.
- Make Your Appointment: The most powerful action you can take is caring for your own health. If you’re due for a screening, pick up the phone and book it.
- Reach Out: Send a card, a text, or a small gift to someone going through treatment. Those gestures of kindness mean so much.
- Donate or Volunteer: Whether it’s a national organization or a local support group, your time and resources truly help.
- Spread the Word: Share information, encourage your friends and daughters, and normalize conversations about breast health.
It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture—often it’s the little things that ripple out in the biggest ways.
How Skincare Brands Can Educate and Empower
As someone who has spent more than four decades in the beauty and wellness industry, I feel strongly that brands like mine should use our platforms for education. Women trust us with their skin, and with that trust comes responsibility.
Part of my mission with Dubois Beauty is to give women not just products, but knowledge—knowledge about safe ingredients, the importance of clean formulations, and the connection between skincare and overall health. Many people don’t realize that personal care products can still contain questionable chemicals. Offering safer options is one way we can empower women to make better choices for themselves and their families. Everyday it seems more and more information is coming out about the importance of clean and safe ingredients.
Education creates empowerment, and empowerment creates change.
Connection Between Self-Care and Health Awareness
This month also invites us to think about the link between self-care and health. I’ve always said skincare is more than a routine—it’s a ritual. When you take a few minutes in the morning or evening to care for your skin, you’re not just applying serums and creams. You’re sending yourself a message: I matter. My health matters.
That same mindset applies to preventive health care. When we prioritize ourselves, we notice changes more quickly, we keep up with screenings, and we create healthier habits. Self-care isn’t indulgence—it’s responsibility. And it’s one of the most powerful tools we have in raising awareness and protecting our health.
Conclusion: Small Actions, Big Impact
The importance of breast cancer awareness cannot be overstated. Every October, I’m reminded that the simplest actions—wearing pink, scheduling a mammogram, supporting a friend, or choosing clean beauty products—can create real change.
At Dubois Beauty, our commitment goes beyond skincare. It’s about caring for the whole person, encouraging women to feel confident, healthy, and supported. This month, let’s honor survivors, lift up those in treatment, and remember those we’ve lost by continuing to spread awareness and take care of ourselves.
Together, our small actions add up to a big impact. And if even one person remembers to schedule their screening because of a conversation, a pink ribbon, or a blog like this one, then we’ve made a difference.
From my heart to yours, thank you for being part of this community and for standing with me in support of women’s health. Let’s keep the conversation going—not just in October, but every day of the year.
