What is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is just what it sounds like: cleansing your face twice! First with an oil based cleanser or micellar water, and then with a gentle cleanser of your choice, ideally water based. The process originated in Korea and has become common across the United States in the past several years.

Why Should I Try Double Cleansing?

Cleansing is a foundational piece of any good skin care routine and double cleansing uses different cleansers for different kinds of dirt to clean much deeper into the pores. Oil based cleansers are best at removing residue from makeup, sunscreen and sebum (an oily substance produced in the sebaceous glands). Water based cleansers are then used to make sure the skin is completely clean and free of sweat, dead skin cells, bacteria, pollutants and debris.

Double Cleansing

The double cleansing process

  1. Apply an oil based or micellar water cleanser to your face. Clean thoroughly and rinse with lukewarm water..
  2. While your face is still damp, apply a water-based or other gentle cleanser. Cleanse for at least a minute.
  3. Rinse and pat dry.
  4. Apply a moisturizer immediately

What Skin Types Are Best for Double Cleansing

While many aestheticians and skin care experts recommend double cleansing there are some skin conditions that require special care for this process.

Experts recommend that those with acne prone skin opt for a micellar water based cleanser for the first step, rather than an oil based cleanser which can exacerbate acne.

Dermatologists say that heavy makeup wearers and city dwellers exposed to high pollution levels may especially benefit from double cleansing. Folks in these categories will likely benefit from double cleansing once every day in the evening.

People who don’t wear makeup regularly and aren’t frequently exposed to high pollution levels may benefit from double cleansing once or twice a week.

Those with eczema, rosacea, or especially sensitive dry skin may want to skip double cleansing altogether.
